Bengalooru - Here I come!

Well, I'm off for on a 4 day holiday to Bangalore - Bengalooru..
There is a one point agenda for the tour.
SIMPLY LAZE AROUND

Hope to catch up with all the gossips in the family (me staying in the scenic IISc campus) n there is a series of get-togethers with my friends.

Well, an another important milestone passes by on Financial year ending day March 31st -
Rajesh has endured a good four years ...He seems to be happy..inspite of me ;-))

So..have a respite from my blogs..Njoy!!

Trivia on Bengalooru:
The name "Bangalore" is an anglicised version of "Bengalooru," a word in the local Kannada language that was given to a town. The story goes that this word was derived from the phrase "bende kaalu ooru," which translates into "the town of boiled beans." It is said that King Ballala of the Hoysala dynasty lost his way in the jungle while on a hunting expedition. Tired and hungry, he encountered a poor, old woman who offered him the only food she had - some boiled beans. Grateful to her, the king named the place "bende kaalu ooru." However, historical evidence shows that "Bengalooru" was recorded much before King Ballala's time in a 9th century temple inscription in the village of Begur. "Bengalooru" still exists today within the city limits in Kodigehalli area and is called "Halebengalooru" or "Old Bangalore."

Whatever..Bangalore Rocks!!

kuravai koothu - second century A.D

Several artefacts have been unearthed from the ruins of a Muruga temple that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been excavating since July 2005 on the beach at Salavankuppam close to the Tiger Cave, near Mamallapuram.

The ASI's discoveries this year include a terracotta plaque that depicts five women performing `kuravai koothu,' a folk dance; a six-foot `vel' (spear held by Lord Muruga) hewn out of granite; three inscriptions in Tamil of the Pallava, Rashtrakuta and Chola kings; a tiny, beautiful terracota Ganesha; and the remnants of a furnace and crucibles for melting and moulding metals.

"It is an important find because it is difficult to find terracotta figurines of the pre-Pallava period," said P. Shanmugam, Director, Institute of Traditional Cultures of South and South-East Asia, University of Madras. "This is the first time in Tamil Nadu that such a group dance plaque has been found," he said. `Kuravai koothu' performed in Muruga temples find mention in the Tamil epic Silapadhikaram.

Underwater Archaeology Centre

Sounds Impressive..na.
Tamil University, Thanjavur has decided to revive research activities at the Underwater Archaeology Centre at Mandapam, near Rameswaram, soon. It will function as an extension research centre of the Tamil University.
Hope, some progress is made
The Hindu gives the report here.

While on the same topic, a video on the History of Tamil Culture was released by Indian Science Monitor (ISM), (didnt know..such a thing existed - ISM is a non-profit research organisation, established in 1989, aimed at generating awareness in the field of science and technology, social anthropology and archaeology.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko who released the video called for encouragement of scientific research to preserve and protect Tamil culture and popularise it globally
Once again the Hindu report here.

Students ?

Well, there is a big question mark about the future of the deemed university students in Tamilnadu. Violent incidents have once again marred Sathyabama College. It was painful to see students covering their faces under masks for fear of identification. It's high time the issue is sorted out.

The 2000-mark

Vaazha Meenukum Vilangu Meenukum

The lastest super duper hit song to storm TamilNadu is the item song from 'Gaana' Ulaganathan in the movie Chithiram Pesuthadi. Heard he is from the slums of Vyasarpadi. A very good break for him.

It is such a crass song that it is so nice ;-)..u will love the originality n the beat. But for malavika, I luv the song.

So me thought, let me do some social service by googling the lyrics of the song.
(hard to garner while hearing/seeing the song)

Here it goes..
--------------------------------------------

Vazhai Meenukum Vilangu meenukum kalyanam
antha thenakuni kootamellam oorvolam
antha nadu kadalil nadakuthaiya thirumanam

Triplicane Parthasarathy Temple

I am deeply disturbed by the insult my friend & her niece had to endure in the premises of the Triplicane Parthasarathy Temple, chennai.

The niece is differently abled and walks with the help of crutches and the special shoes. She was stopped & ridiculed by the people at the temple for having come into the temple with her 'Shoes' on. Even after explaining her situation (even though it is visually seen that she is a polio affected person, she was asked to remove it and come inside. When she explained her inability to walk without the shoes, she was asked to go back.

My friend and she were heaped with insults by the crowd that had gathered by then. It seems they had committed a grave sin by coming in with 'shoes' on, even though they educated enough to read the board that said 'leave ur footwear' outside.

My friend & her niece had to return with a heavy heart. They did not want to complain abt this issue for they are living alone here far away from their near & dear. But I could not hold my self..so my pent up anger is out as blogs.

May be there was another board that said 'Leave Humanity outside' :-(

Rajdeep's Amar Chitra Katha

Man, this is one rocking blog
Amar Chitra Katha paints the pain of Amar Singh.

"In the isolation of Amar Singh though there is a bigger lesson for new age politicians. In many ways, Amar Singh typifies the "corporatisation" of the contemporary politician: netas who climb up the political ladder more by networking and monetary clout and less through mass appeal and charisma."

"Amar Singh has been a master of the game, bringing politics (Mulayam), big business (Subroto Roy Sahara and Anil Ambani) and glamour (Amitabh, Aishwarya and god knows who else) on one platform. You almost have a sneaking admiration for someone who can be having a power breakfast with Anil Ambani in the morning, will be out in the midday sun in Sonbhadra addressing a Thakur samaj rally, and then have a night out with Bollywood stars."

Read the full blog guys..I'm tempted to quote the full context.

Illuminati

Dan Brown regained my favour after a rather dull Digital Fortress. Yeah, Courted the Angels & Demons in a marathon reading session over the weekend. The story unveils on the same lines as Da Vinci Code...Robert Langdon is first introduced here...moves on the same lines..
Has a dream - SOS call - a brutal murder - symbols around - dechiper. The plot is of Robert Langdon trying to stop the Illuminati, a legendary secret society, from destroying the Vatican City with the newly-discovered power of antimatter.
The pace is as racy as the TDVC, but I felt there was too much of description like the functioning of the vatican , the conclave history. And the clues are hidden in the sculptures..so no chance of u breaking your head to decipher the code as in TDVC.

Well, the ambigrams that form the crux of the story evolved beautifully.

The clues are hidden in the works of the famous Sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The sculptures were really breath-taking, when I saw them.
Habakkuk & the Angel (EARTH clue)
West Ponente (AIR clue)
St.Peter Basilica - Scene of action
The Ecstasy of St Theresa (FIRE clue)

R ur private calls still private?

NDTV has exposed a major scam in the telecom industry. NDTV's Sidharth Pandey went undercover to discover how simple it is to destroy somebody's privacy. The somebody is Barkha Dutt.

"Sidharth also asked the agency to tap Barkha's phone number. At first the detective was a bit wary but agreed to provide details of phone conversations for a price. In seven days, the detective was ready with the details of the people Barkha met and spoke with on her Airtel and Hutch phone lines. There were more than 80 pages for two months of all records.Sidharth then asked for more details, such as the names of the people on the phone records. That too was possible. "You tell me which numbers and I can find out the names and the addresses of the people who called her. It will cost you Rs 250 per number," the detective told Sidharth."

....

"In a separate operation, a detective agreed to give NDTV's Poonam Agarwal information about her fiancé's bank accounts. He offered bank statements for a fee of Rs 5,000 and said it is easy to break into records of computerised banks. He said only nationalised banks are a problem. Most institutions from phone companies to banks appear to have moles willing to part with private records for just a few thousand rupees."

Beware, your privacy is under threat!

Blank Noise - Music to ears

Something commendable is being done.
Charu in Romeo and Eve on Blank Space gives the pointer to the Blank Noise project.
U have a blog-a-thon 2006 that requests people to tell their stories n views about the problem of street harassment.
The menance has grown to take epic propotions in chennai. I dont remember reading anywhere else of girls dying of eve-teasing. The ugly incidents that shook chennai sometime back continue to this day. Eve Teasing is the classic case where the victim is held guilty of the crime.

Now-a days there is a dangerous trend in Movies - heros after the customary 'saving the heroine from eve-teasers' sermonises on why the dress was responsible for the incident and how girls should behave...TV popularises those clippings & I cringe everytime when I see that. (the Sivakasi scene between vijay & asin).

The movie issue seems very trivial to me, after reading the real time ugly incidents in the comments section of the blog-thon 2006.

Spread the word ..Guys.

Velachery - real estate prices aim the stars

GOSH! I couldnt believe my ears, when I heard the price quoted for the latest project of Ceebros in Velachery - The price was Rs.3000 per Square Feet, mind you this is for a apartment not independent house. A decent two bedroom apartment in half a ground - 1200 sqft would cost a whopping 36 lakhs.
THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR VELACHERY!

There are uptown areas in Chennai like Adaya, Nungambakkam which quote almost the same prices or a little more.

I stayed in velachery for nearly three years and except for the fact that my office was nearby, there was simply no reason why I should have been there.
Velachery was once a lake, now you have huge apartments coming up everythere with simply no basic facility.

Ground water has depleted completely and the residents are at the mercy of Water Tankers. (The recent rains has eased the situation a bit). You dont have decent hotels, hospitals, schools, entertainment avenues etc.,
BUT the land prices are rising up like there is no tomorrow. From Rs.800-1000 per sqt three years back, it has zoomed to Rs. 3000 per Sqt.

The rise in price has been attributed to the IT corridor that is coming up parallely. Sure...only software guys can afford soo much for soo little.

Missed an investment opportunity!

update: couldnt post this link in the comments:

"the real estate is acting crazy. just yesterday, I enquired the price of new apartment that was coming up near our office..he quoted the same 3000 per sqt. Have a look at the place - hindu report
(the apt is coming up near the parked tvs 50)..Mind u this photo was taken some 10 days after the rains had stopped."

Another Update:
The Hindu has an elaborate article on the Paradox that is Velachery

Rage of Angels - Sidney Sheldon

Today morning, I finished reading Rage of Angels for the umpteenth time. And as always, it leaves a lump in the throat.

Sidney is one hell of a master story teller. The pace is too good. He just simply breathes life into Jennifer Parker, Adam warner & Michael Morretti I would have liked a happier ending though!

BTW, one trivia - we had a Tamil movie loosely based on this novel - it was Manivannan directed Sathyaraj, Ambika, Rajesh starrer - Makkal En Pakkam.
Well...u might be wondering how a tamil film heroine could love two people at the same time..thatz what they have changed. Adam Warner (Rajesh) was made the villain (an MLA) who dumps our lawyer heroine and Michael Morretti(Sathyaraj) plays saviour who rescues the child. When the don proposes to his lawyer, the lawyer refuses flatly saying I'm a mother to a child..the story moves to the political arena & tapers to a silly climax.

Forbidden Temptations

I knew it was wrong. But I couldn't resist it. The demon inside was on a song 'the righteous path is quite tedious; it is easier to go the forbidden way. Come-on! just once in a while. No harm in it'

Unnecessarily, I remembered the The Alchemist "when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. It's called the principle of favorability, beginner's luck." Sucks..I need to think of something else.

Shooted a 'Leaving Early' mail in office and I prepared myself for the eventuality. Reached the appointed place and looked around. Definitely, the universe was conspiring against me. The electricity had taken a short holiday and the entire place was dark!

Even though, I couldn't see clearly, I could sense the presence. Wise men say 'Its in the air'. Candles were lighted, and they added a magical touch to the proceedings. I gave a 'You are very special' Teddy bear as a gift which was purchased after much deliberation.

Things were on the move and there was no escaping it. I came face to face with the Forbidden Temptation.

'Just Once' ..I chanted. No use, it changed to 'Just one more time'. Hopeless, I had taken the plunge. I knew the consequences very well. It just doesnot augur well for me. All of it were buried under desire.

Well, I had finished eating ten hot hot fried potato bhajis made for my hubby's birthday. I'm on the wrong side of the weigh-scale and with two BP patients around, Bhajis were a distant dream in our house.

Belated Happy Birthday - Rajesh!

Sign of bad times

The students of Deemed Universities in TamilNadu are a worried lot now.

The Hindu reports
"The students and parents are confused on whether or not the deemed universities should abide by the standards and norms set by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), for running engineering programmes. The colleges, too are not coming out categorically on their next move."

We have seen violence erupting in SRM Deemed University and Sathyabama Deemed University. The colleges have been shutdown. I believe violence is not a solution this problem, it just makes it bigger. The concerned parties - AICTE & the colleges should come clean on the status.

Read another report here.
