Sunlight is the only source of Vitamin D apart from mother's feed. Now, with babies being raised in closed a/c comforts of apartments Vitamin D deficiency is on the raise. As exposure to sunlight is reduced, the bones are affected. The irony is Chennai sees just hot, hotter, hottest climate.

Here, in US, pediatricians recommend Vi-daylin ADC, a supplement to mother's milk for Vitamin A, D and C. Though it's sunny for most part of the day through out the year, one can't expose the infant to sunlight because of the freezing temperature for few months in a year. Pediatricians also discourage direct exposure to sunlight for infants under six months of age.

The above link gives the sources of Vitamin D and also explains the need for supplementing for infants who are exclusively on mother's milk.
